Morris A. Inch Pain as a Means of Grace

This text provides a novel approach to a critical issue–the potential of pain. Initially, the potential of pain is explored by way of paradise lost, as an explanation of why things are as we experience them. The book then entertains the classic Job narrative, as it pertains to addressing the question of why the godly suffer. The passion narratives next invite our attention and the collective voices of the martyrs appear as a logical extension of the sufferings of Christ. This leads into a more analytical treatment of the topic, highlighting key aspects of the extended discussion. Moreover, the text begins and concludes with examples meant to illustrate pain as a means of grace.

David Martin Whitworth Missio Dei and the Means of Grace

The missio Dei concept has shifted missiological thinking from an anthropocentric view of mission to the understanding that the church and persons are participants in the missio Dei.
A Wesleyan perspective of grace and the means of grace inform the development of a theology of participation in the missio Dei that overcomes the repetitive articulations of mission as simply being human action or divine action. Through the means of grace, Christian disciples participate in the missio Dei as those transformed by God's love and those through whom that love embraces and transforms the world.
Missio Dei and the Means of Grace: A Theology of Participation offers a profoundly simple approach and understanding to twenty-first-century missiology that is applicable for all persons, all ages, and all ecclesial expressions of the Christian church, as participation in the missio Dei through the means of grace is understood to be a holistic way of life where spiritual formation is understood as inseparable from justice ministries.

Larry Duggins Together

Together: Community as a Means of Grace addresses the concept of community as an avenue to a deeper relationship with God. Using an ecumenical Wesleyan approach, Duggins explores the concept of «God as community» to conclude that bringing people together in almost any setting allows them to grow in God's image. He frames this idea using the historical concept of the «means of grace»: the ordinary ways in which people encounter God. Drawing heavily on the work of the Missional Wisdom Foundation, Duggins begins with a reflection on the community-building aspects of traditional church. He then uses storytelling to introduce four common forms of community: community through work, community through food, community through children's schools and activities, and community through shared recreational activities. Together is intended to help Christian people embrace the freedom to experiment with alternative forms of Christian community. Duggins nudges the missional imagination of people who long for spiritual connection and growth, but for whom traditional church is not the answer. Using a «yes, and» approach, he shows that traditional church can empower and stand alongside new forms of community, each of which can act as a means of grace.

Dr. Alexander Lowen M.D. The Spirituality of the Body

In Spirituality of the Body, Alexander Lowen provides a unique perspective about the nature of spirituality. Lowen views the body as the outer manifestation of the spirit and defines grace as the divine spirit acting within the body. Lowen shows that in the healthy individual, the divine spirit is experienced as the natural gracefulness of the body and is reflected in the person’s behavior. In a healthy body, movement, feeling, and thinking are integrated in grace and harmony. This book includes bodypsychotherapy techniques and exercises aimed at alleviating muscular tension and restoring the body’s natural grace. This spiritual grace involves a sense of connectedness to a higher order. In this state of grace we feel a kinship with all living creatures, and recognize our connection to our environment and to the world.

Morris A. Inch A Guide to Christian Ethics

While it is readily admitted that we learn in order to do, we are in need of guidance. It is with this in mind that Morris A. Inch set out to compose this present volume. Inch has taken as his inspiration the biblical injunction: «Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will» (Rom 2:12) and the graphic imagery concerning Christians derived from the Epistle of Diagnetus: «They dwell in their own countries, but simply as sojourners. As citizens, they share in all things with others, and yet endure all things as if foreigners. Every foreign land is to them as their native county, and every land of their birth as a land of strangers.» One might gather from reading A Guide to Christian Ethics the necessary direction for a more true Christian faith and practice in our world today.

Saulius Geniusas The Phenomenology of Pain

The Phenomenology of Pain is the first book-length investigation of its topic to appear in English. Groundbreaking, systematic, and illuminating, it opens a dialogue between phenomenology and such disciplines as cognitive science and cultural anthropology to argue that science alone cannot clarify the nature of pain experience without incorporating a phenomenological approach. Building on this premise, Saulius Geniusas develops a novel conception of pain grounded in phenomenological principles: pain is an aversive bodily feeling with a distinct experiential quality, which can only be given in original first-hand experience, either as a feeling-sensation or as an emotion. Geniusas crystallizes the fundamental methodological principles that underlie phenomenological research. On the basis of those principles, he offers a phenomenological clarification of the fundamental structures of pain experience and contests the common conflation of phenomenology with introspectionism. Geniusas analyzes numerous pain dissociation syndromes, brings into focus the de-personalizing and re-personalizing nature of chronic pain experience, and demonstrates what role somatization and psychologization play in pain experience. In the process, he advances Husserlian phenomenology in a direction that is not explicitly worked out in Husserl’s own writings.

Stanley K. Fowler Rethinking Baptism

Baptism may be more important than you think. Virtually every Christian tradition practices baptism, but with diverse understandings of its form and meaning. Baptists (and similar traditions) have emphasized the restriction of baptism to confessing believers and immersion as the mode, and they have usually interpreted baptism as a post-conversion act of human obedience, rather than a sacramental means of grace. In this book, a Baptist theologian calls for a reformation of Baptist thought and practice, arguing that a biblical theology of baptism interprets baptism as a sacramental seal of conversion. The book develops the biblical case for this perspective and answers questions about its practical implications.

Morris A. Inch The Enigma of Justice

While justice is thought indispensible for a healthy society, its complex character gives rise to conflicting applications. Accordingly, The Enigma of Justice serves as an appropriate title. In greater detail, the course is set with a consideration of justice in context of the prophets. These were faced with the unenviable task of fine-tuning the monarchy to its covenant ideals. The topic is then treated in its classical setting, as one of the cardinal virtues. This introduces a series of competing theories, more or less compatible with one another. In still greater detail, the text treats a wide range of related topics, such as justice in conjunction with poverty, mercy, and freedom. In conclusion, it touches on justice from an international perspective.

Terry D. Cooper Grace for the Injured Self

Even under the best circumstances in life, we all suffer psychological injuries to our self. These injuries from others can range from passive hurtful comments to intentional abusive assaults. The end result is that our sense of being a cohesive and secure self is threatened. We may begin to experience degrees of vulnerability and self-doubts, or of rage and desire for revenge. We may even feel as if we were «falling apart.» In all cases these self-injuries chip away at our self-cohesion and self-esteem.
Grace for the Injured Self helps us to better understand the significance of these injuries to our self, as well as how these injuries can be healed through the self psychology approach of Heinz Kohut. Throughout its pages, this book emphasizes the empathic presence of another as a source of grace. Empathy is the most powerful means by which the self is reassured, strengthened, and ultimately restored. It is this empathic responsiveness of others that holds our self together and helps us daily maintain our self-cohesion and self-esteem. The self psychology perspective of Heinz Kohut, who many consider the most significant psychoanalyst since Sigmund Freud, is made available here as a primary means by which clergy and other helping professionals can provide a healing context for the restoration of injured selves.
